Anna Douglas
1939 - 2025

We announce the tender news that IMT founder and long-time Guiding Teacher, Anna Douglas, has died. She was 85.

 Anna wished to be remembered for her love of practicing and teaching the buddha-dharma, and that she loved to laugh. She inspired so many in her 40-year career teaching retreats at Spirit Rock and elsewhere (click HERE to visit a tribute page on the Spirit Rock website, including links to articles and meditations by Anna). Anna first planted the seed of the dharma here in Tucson in 2006 with a small meditation group. In 2011 she invited three other teachers to join her, forming Insight Meditation Tucson. Anna founded, grew, and nurtured our sangha, and now her work is complete. Anna has joined the lineage of beloved ancestors.

And IMT carries on. Just as Anna was inspired to share the dharma she learned from her teachers, IMT leadership is devoted to blowing on the embers of liberation Anna fostered in all of us.

 There will be a ceremony celebrating Anna’s life later this spring.

 In closing, here is a message that Anna shared as she was preparing to step back from IMT:

Here is a small (but mighty) teaching which has guided me thru the last twenty years or so. May it guide you also!

In this passing moment karma ripens
and all things come to be.
I vow to choose what is:
If there is cost, I choose to pay.
If there is need, I choose to give.
If there is pain, I choose to feel.
If there is sorrow, I choose to grieve.
When burning, I choose heat.
When calm, I choose peace.
When starving, I choose hunger.
When happy, I choose joy.
Whom I encounter, I choose to meet.
What I shoulder, I choose to bear.
When it is my death, I choose to die.
Where this takes me, I choose to go.
Being with what is, I respond to what is.

This life is as real as a dream;
the one who knows it cannot be found;
May all Buddhas and Wise Ones
help me live this vow.

 May the Blessings of Dharma surround you and protect you always!”
