led by IMT Dharma Leader,
David Bornstein
“This is the direct path for purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of pain and grief, for the attainment of the true way, for the realization of nibbana—namely the four foundations of mindfulness. ”
~ The Buddha, Satipatthana Sutta
Mindfulness is an innate human faculty, and practices for cultivating mindfulness have been around for millennia. Maybe you’ve noticed the skyrocketing popularity in such practices, evident in the proliferation of apps, media coverage, and classes in recent years. This is good! However, most mindfulness practices do not hold liberative potential. Mindfulness, as taught by the Buddha, has the singular purpose of freeing us from suffering.
The Satipatthana Sutta, or Four Foundations of Mindfulness, is a seminal discourse in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. The Buddha offered clear, detailed instructions for cultivating mindfulness: establishing presence in the breath and body, feeling, mind, and phenomena. In this series, IMT dharma leader David Bornstein will offer a careful, accessible exploration of this central teaching.
This weekly gathering supports continuity of practice with a community of like-minded people. The intention is to bring these valuable teachings of the Buddha into practical applications in our daily lives.
The evening includes a 30-minute sitting meditation, a dharma talk, and discussion or interactive exercises. Open to those new to practice as well as those with an established mindfulness practice.
